I think I joined dA for purely my own needs. Basically I was just interested in
getting my work, finally, on the web. My friends, who always admired my work,
encouraged me to open a Facebook account. At 49, at the time, I was never into
social media at all, but I did so any way. I displayed my work, but I was never
inspired to make anything new. The only people who ever visited my page were
more interested in becoming "liked", or being a "friend". I didn't feel comfortable
at all. Most of my Google/Bing searches led me to DeviantART. For some reason
I assumed it was just for established artist (whatever that meant), but I quickly
learned it was for all of us. In May of 2013, I signed on. It changed my life, but
not all at once.
Within a few days, after submitting my work, I received a llama. I had no idea
what that was, or what it was for. I learned it was a nice gesture from another
artist, and I returned it. In time I got used to being online, and having conversations with other artist like myself. I felt inspired, in a way I hadn't felt
since my days in art school, waaaaay back in the 80's. I found myself creating
more pieces, and communicating with many different artist. I did something I
never set out to do...I made friends. Set up collaborations, and picked up new
techniques. Signing onto dA was the best thing I'd done, artistically, since starting to draw, in the 60's.
I've had nothing but great times on this site, but my finest hour was the day
I expanded my family. Fate on this site called DeviantART has granted me very
close ties all over the world, witness to incredible artist, and my most precious
gift...A new family. A Brother, Sister, and a Son, whom I love dearly. If not for
dA and its great array of talented artists, I probably won't be as inspired as I am
today...I wouldn't have the incredible friends I'm very fortunate to have...and
I wouldn't have my new loving and caring family.
To all of you out there, who might be considering deactivating your accounts,
please don't, at least not yet. DeviantART is a community of incredible vibrant
people who can lift you and inspire you in ways you've never imagined. Expand
your base, learn from the others in the community, and share what you know
with the rest of us. DeviantART definitely changed my life and my vocation for
the better. Allow it to do the same for you! Thanks, to all of my friends and my
Family!
